All in the Eyes

All in the Eyes

Feb 9 - Mar 10, 2013
Opening Reception: Feb 10, 2:00-4:00pm

In portraiture, their expressions, inner beauty and strengths are what are deemed most important and hopefully inherent in each image. Drawn from ideas of strength, rage, beauty and humanity that are in each of us and make us the people we are, may be also seen in nature. Each subject is defined by ever-changing moods, unique emotion, and their own style, grace, and color. While they might not be perfect, the subtle qualities beneath the surface that shine through are what make each meaningful to me.

Elisabeth has created her own photography business connected to her photographic interest; portraiture. Elisabeth’s personal photographic work explores portraiture. Her work has been shown in many national group shows. Recently in Gallery Z’s AFROCENTRIC: From the Perspective of Black Women, and Marblehead Artist Association’s New Member Show. Also multiple solo showings in the New England area. Recently, October 2011, Neville had a collaborative show with her late Father at The Griffin Museum in Winchester MA., with her photography and his sketches. “Eidetic Image”. Elisabeth has also been closely involved with many artists associations, national and international. Presently she is a member of the Marblehead and Salem Artist Association, Artists Under the Dome initiative, working for the rights of Artists involved with the Copyright Alliance.

An additional endeavor

Recently, I have been looking for my way to lift myself out of the clutter of the popularity of the "instagram" look and get my work out there. It has been a struggle. With all of the cameras out there, people picking up a camera and their friends saying they are the best out there and to start a business and undercharging, and trying to rise about those ignorant folk who think that it is "OK" to say "If you charge too much then, I will just go to one of those people with a point and shoot on Auto."

I am in NO way saying that I do not want people who want to do photography should not. But, there is a great deal more than selective color, HDR, instagram, and filters and softening (The Doris Day look). There are people out there that are VERY talented and have spent decades honing their craft and they actually understand how to use a Pentax K1000 or a Yashica, or they spent a LOT of time with their 000 brushes and brown or black dye dots all over their hands, or those with airbrush dust in their lungs from airbrushing... with an airbrush.

There is a reason for my wanting to teach. I enjoy seeing the students develop their art, be more creative and to learn. It is wonderful.

Recently a friend asked if I could do some shots of her architectural redesigns for her company. I agreed and went along. It is a new thing to do, but I did find it interesting. It is similar to a still life. I am looking for the negative and positive space. The shapes, the design the colors and creating space. I have missed it. But, I decided... why not, AND I am able to DO some of the things I have been teaching. I really hope this continues and I get more of these opportunities.

A day of recharging.

I had a day in my studio recharging my creativity. I had fun on a shoot and had a great model and got some work for my show that will open in February. Yup, I am cutting it close! (More about the show soon!)

I have had an awful creative block in the past year. Some say it has been becasue I am mourning, others say it is just I needed inspiration. I have to say that it is probably a bit of both. I have a lot of my Dad's work in my studio and up on my walls to inspire me to keep going and to keep reaching. I have been drawing and painting a little and thinking of printing again (I used to a great deal) I just have not been able to pick up my camera and do anything worth while with it for a long time.

Yes, I have had shoots and work, but it has been more mechanical, though I have had GREAT fun with my clients. The thought that "Those who cannot do, teach" has been echoing in my head. I had lots of shows for a while and then I just stopped trying.

Well, new breath has put me back on the right path. Do my thing. Stop trying so hard to do what is "expected" of me and what is thought to be the NEW best thing out there. I have been crippled by the idea that there are so many new styles out there; all Photoshop created. These styles are the new in thing. I got lost in that; very lost. And I am realizing that I have and have had my own style for the past 45 years and I should stick with it! SO.. I am! And I am pretty proud of myself (which is all that counts!)
